In the last twelve months, I have been reflecting on Spiritualism (which is defined as a philosophy, a science and a religion) and where it currently sits in society. It seems of recent times it has been particularly difficult from a spiritual aspect for many people.
Presently, there is major emphasis on mediumship, evidence and individual messages. Receiving a message from a loved can bring enormous comfort to those receiving the message, but it does not necessarily help people evolve on a spiritual level. Here, I am referring to both the medium giving the message and the individual receiving the message. So, I ask all mediums, where does your skill come from; where does your communication come from? Do you take your gift for granted? Do you apply the messages to yourself if they are relevant?
In order to follow a spiritual path, we all must learn to discriminate between the motivations of the worldly mind and the wisdom from the higher realms—distinguishing the real from the unreal. The worldly mind dwells within us and causes us to doubt spiritual truth as we know it. We must keep this in mind and be diligent as it will challenge us at times.
Mediums have a personal responsibility to evolve on a spiritual level. Spirituality is the ultimate goal. Just because one has developed their skill in mediumship, does not necessarily make them a spiritual person. For example, if one is judging or creating negative energy towards others, it affects both the recipient, the receiver, and anyone else who is connected to the situation, this is called the Ripple Effect. Your thoughts and actions will affect others whether you know it or not. Thus, releasing your will and limitations will allow your spiritual development to continue. Furthermore, by acceding to a higher power through universal love, ensures your path to success.
Therefore, rising above self-importance is also paramount for one’s spiritual development. It does not matter how many people one helps if you do not evolve personally, you will remain a young soul with many lessons ahead.
When you create energy—positively or negatively—you must ask yourself, what is your motive? If it is not aligned to the greater good of all things on earth, then you have to live with the consequences, as every action or thought will generate an experience until you understand it fully. If we carefully reflect on our actions and thoughts, healing our mind, body and soul will come into effect.
Therefore, getting back to Spiritualism, adopting the principles—as channeled by Emma Hardinge Britten through the communicating spirit of Robert Owen in 1871—is of vital significance. Although, there are many variations today, I am posting below the traditional version—as amended by the SNU of the UK in 1901—of the seven principles to remind people of these values and what Spiritualism stands for. In its simplicity, it is also notably a way of living.
1-The Fatherhood of God
2- The Brotherhood of Man
3- Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels
4- The continuous existence of the human Soul
5- Personal Responsibility
6- Compensation and retribution hereafter for all good and evil deeds done on earth
7- Eternal progress open to every Soul
So here is my challenge to mediums – contribute more to the understanding of Spiritualism in all aspects; be more active within the community and attend services where possible. To the public in general, no matter what your belief systems are, explore the philosophy of Spiritualism, and start building yourselves into having a more positive outlook and a more prosperous life.
Visit your local spiritualists' centres and ask questions if you don’t understand something. For myself, I attend the Spiritual Church Brisbane in Spring Hill, Brisbane, and I can recommend that there are people who understand Spiritualism and who can answer your questions.
